A look at the best Baylor athletic traditions

Baylor athletics is having one of the most successful runs in recent memory, which has brought the fan base to a fever pitch. For the first time in decades, Baylor is the hot program in Texas, with success across the board.

However, Baylor is also one of the most historic universities in the nation and it cares deeply about keeping tradition going throughout thick and thin.

The Baylor Line When students are admitted to Baylor, they go to the university’s annual freshman “Line Camp.” Then, they travel to the university’s original location in Independence, Texas, and receive yellow “Baylor Line” jerseys and “slime caps” with their home town and expected year of graduation on it. The freshmen wear the yellow jerseys to every football game and are rewarded by getting some of the best seats in the house right behind the opposing team’s bench.

Running the Line Not only are freshmen at Baylor rewarded with prime seating; they’re some of the only students in the nation allowed on the field. cheapnflsalejerseys Students line up hours before in the south end zone and run onto the field before every game. The mad rush crosses the field and makes a fan tunnel that the players run out of before the game. There are few sights quite like seeing the Baylor Line before a football game; maybe that’s why the Bears haven’t lost at home since 2012 and are tied with Alabama for the nation’s longest home winning streak.

Immortal Ten On Jan. 22, 1927, Baylor basketball was on a bus traveling to play the rival Texas Longhorns in Austin. But only miles from the arena in nearby Round Rock, the bus was hit by a train. Out of the 21 players, coaches and fans on the bus, 10 died. This group became known as the Immortal Ten. They are remembered every year during the Freshman Mass Meeting and by a monument built on campus.

Homecoming Baylor is far from the only school to have Homecoming, but did you know that the Smithsonian credited the university with the first collegiate Homecoming ever? In 1909, thousands of students and alumni converged on the Waco campus to watch a football game and celebrate the university; 106 years later, the tradition lives on.
